Mission & Purpose

Center On Deafness – Inland Empire is a non-profit community based service agency whose mission is to enable deaf, hard-of-hearing, and deafened adults to live independent, productive lives, with full access to the services and opportunities available to people who hear.

In the summer of 1994, GLAD-IC was established to provide quality services to the Inland Empire’s Deaf community. At the beginning of the year of 1997, the name was changed from GLAD-IC to the current CODIE. With offices in Riverside and Victorville, CODIE employs eleven field specialists and cadre of volunteers.

Over the years, CODIE, through its legislative and judicial client service provision, has dramatically improved the quality of life for deaf and hard of hearing persons and their families.

Advocacy

We are dedicated to protecting and advancing the legal rights of deaf people as individuals and as a class. Past advocacy work aided in the creation of the California Relay Service; the courtroom interpreter and assistive listening system laws; and in educating lawmakers about the educational needs of Deaf children.

Services for individuals include advice and referrals for general legal problems as well as representation in cases of discrimination and special education. CODIE also serves as an advocate/liaison for social security recipients and to parents planning their deaf child’s education (IEP).

Counseling

Center On Deafness – Inland Empire’s peer counselors, communicating in the client’s preferred mode, teach independent living skills, provide information, and emotional support, and help in time of crisis.

Clients come to CODIE for housing concerns, consumer protection, educational questions or any other social or economic concerns they may have.

Community Education

Center On Deafness – Inland Empire, Community Education follows two paths, consumer education to the Deaf Community and education to the hearing community. Through workshops and individual activities, the Deaf Community gains information to help them make informed choices and decisions, and the hearing community is afforded the opportunity to appreciate the depth and breadth of the Deaf Community.

EDD / Job Placement

We have long recognized the barriers to full job satisfaction created by deafness. One of the organization’s most successful job placement programs is coordinated with the California Employment Development Department. For more information, contact the local EDD office nearest you.
