A Riverside Deaf Football Team: From Underdog to Dynasty
The California Deaf boys of Riverside have clinched the 8-man football Southern Section CIF state championship once again! Join us for a thrilling celebratory parade right in front of the school at 3044 Horace Street, on Monday, November 27, 2023, at 2:30 pm. Media personnel are invited to capture the excitement, with private interviews available post-celebration.
In a season marked by the departure of key players to Gallaudet University and the challenge of rebuilding with a fresh, younger squad, the CSDR Cubs defied the odds. Although not an undefeated run, the Cubs secured a majority of victories, culminating in a showdown against perennial rivals Faith Baptist of Canoga Park for the third consecutive year.
Amid freezing temperatures at the Martin Luther King High School field in Riverside, the Cubs faced a 14-0 deficit early in the championship game. Undeterred, the young squad rallied, overcoming an interception and ball fumbles. With determination, they turned the tables with miraculous plays into the fourth quarter, securing a 54-42 victory and claiming the championship.
Beyond the on-field triumph, the CSDR Football team is receiving accolades. KUSI.TV will honor them as the “Prep Pigskin Report Underdog of the Year” on Tuesday, November 28, in San Diego. Additionally, New York Times writer Thomas Fuller captures the team’s inspiring journey through 2021 and 2022 in his book, The Boys of Riverside: A Deaf Football Team and a Quest for Glory, available for pre-order through Penguin Random House: Link.
