*Deaf parents are a special type of mother and father. In 1994, this organization, Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs) decided to designate one day each year for hearing children ~young & old~ everywhere to honor their Deaf parents: Mother, Father Deaf Day, held each year on the last Sunday in April. The day is usually marked with events like picnics, beach outings, etc
ACTION ALERT:
Join GLAD and CODIE to oppose Assembly Bill AB 2072. This law would replace deaf/hard of hearing consumer organizations with early education centers on the list of resources for parents and families of newborns identified with hearing loss. Please send letters to Members of the Assembly Health Committee listed below on or before Tuesday, April 20, 2010 when they will consider this new bill.
Assembly member Mendoza (D) of Norwalk introduced a bill called AB 2072. The bill will be heard by the California Assembly Health Committee on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. The Assembly Health Committee Members will vote to either to support or oppose this bill.
ABOUT AB 2072: Existing law (the Newborn and Infant Hearing Screening, Tracking, and
Intervention Act) requires every general acute care hospital with licensed perinatal services to offer every newborn a hearing screening test and provide written information on the availability of community resources and services for children with hearing loss to their parents.

Our letters need to be prepared quickly by tomorrow morning (Monday) as the AB2072 bill will be heard in the Assembly Health Committee on April 5th. Depending on which city you live in, find your assemblymember from http://192.234.213.69/amapsearch/framepage.asp.
Dear friends, as we understand the challenges many are facing, we need to PROVE we have many generations of well-adjusted and happy Deaf children (and adults) like YOU. Please HELP by sending a “letter of opposition” as a new bill AB2070 introduced by Assemblymember Mendoza causes us a GREAT concern. A group representing the oral community known as the California Coalition sponsors this bill. Please view this vlog to help you understand our concerns, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Terrylene/111065045572125?ref=ts&v=wall
This is to encourage you all Californians to send letters to Assembly member Mendoza, and the Health Committee members. The letters need to be sent before this Monday morning! Remember it is the right of Deaf babies or toddlers to acquire FULL language acquisition that by the time the child starts school, the child is ready to learn! These babies need YOUR help to let the legislators know how important language is. Go and view this vlog NOW — see how you can HELP with a letter sample ready to be sent. Your effort to send a letter opposing AB2072 will be GREATLY appreciated as we demand REAL changes for REAL results –in the best interest of Deaf babies
Riverside ASL Social will be held this Friday, April 2nd.
CODIE”s Community Advocate Dennis Cruz, will be our special guest sharing about May’s Deaf Senior Citizens Month. I know it’s Good Friday and several may be celebrating or attending their church services, but we will continue to hold our Social at Tyler mall anyways this Friday.
While on this subject, there seems to be a little confusion if these socials are held every 1st or 2nd Friday of the month. Last year, it was always held on the first Friday of the month. If I couldn’t make it, one of my assistants Elise, Chris or Laurie would hold the social anyways without me. However, the first Friday of this year was New Year’s Day, so I changed it to the 2nd Friday for month of January. Then, I let everyone know that if a major holiday or weekend of holiday ends up on the 1st Friday, we will change it to the 2ndFriday of the month, so many can attend and don’t miss out.
So, as a rule of thumb, it will be held on the first Friday of the month, unless other wise noted and please don’t hesitate to email me or a CODIE advocate, if there is any question when it will be held. We want everyone to have a good time socializing and practicing their ASL skills. This is why I ask to be signed up for www.CODIE.org email subscription and to tell others, so they will updated.
